# Why Is Your Email Marketing Conversion Rate So Low?

*A low email marketing conversion rate usually means campaigns carry the load flows should carry, open rates are inflated, and dormant subscribers drag results.*

Your list grows every month, the open rate looks healthy, and Shopify or your CRM shows almost nothing from email. The cause usually sits in who receives the emails and when.

## What is email marketing conversion rate?

Email marketing conversion rate is the share of people who received an email and then completed the action it asked for, usually a purchase for a store or an enquiry or booking for a service business. Most platforms report it as placed order rate: orders attributed to an email divided by emails delivered.

- A healthy email program earns most of its orders from automated flows, and campaigns to the whole list convert at a fraction of that rate.
- Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates open rates, so judge email by clicks, orders and enquiries.
- Sending more campaigns to an unengaged list lowers conversion rate and damages deliverability at the same time.
- The fastest fix for a low conversion rate is to build or repair the welcome, abandoned cart and post-purchase flows before writing another campaign.

## What is a good email marketing conversion rate?

For an ecommerce store, a campaign placed order rate below 0.2 percent and a flow placed order rate around 2 percent are both normal. [Branvas, summarising Klaviyo benchmark data (2026)](https://branvas.com/blogs/news/ecommerce-email-marketing-benchmarks), lists campaigns at 0.16 percent, flows at 2.11 percent and the top 10 percent of flows at 4.30 percent.

Compare your numbers flow by flow, because one blended account rate mixes a welcome series with a newsletter sent to people who stopped reading years ago.

## Why do my emails get opens but no sales?

The open rate is partly fictional. Apple Mail Privacy Protection, launched with iOS 15 in 2021, loads the tracking pixel whether or not the person reads the email, so opens are logged for messages nobody saw. A list with a 45 percent open rate and a 0.5 percent click rate has an engagement problem hiding behind a vanity number.

Oracle's marketing cloud team explains [how Mail Privacy Protection changes email measurement](https://blogs.oracle.com/marketingcloud/how-mail-privacy-protection-changing-how-email-marketing-performance-measured) and recommends judging performance on clicks, conversions and site activity. Orders and enquiries recorded in your store or CRM are the cleanest signal.

## Why do automated flows convert better than campaigns?

Flows convert better because they fire at the moment someone shows intent: a signup, an abandoned cart, a first order, a product viewed twice. A campaign arrives when the sender is ready. Klaviyo's [2024 benchmark report](https://resources.klaviyo.com/2024-benchmark-report) says automated flows generate up to 30 times more revenue per recipient than campaigns because they are so timely and targeted.

In our client work across Shopify stores and service businesses we keep seeing a dozen campaigns a month next to one welcome email set up on launch day and never touched again. Our [lifecycle email and SMS work for a US store](https://proofofpixel.agency/work/dcgreatergoods) shows flows and campaigns planned as one program.

If your cart flow exists and still underperforms, read [why an abandoned cart flow stops converting](https://proofofpixel.agency/blog/abandoned-cart-flow-not-converting).

> Proof of Pixel's position: an email program should earn most of its orders from automated flows, and a business that sends weekly campaigns before its welcome and cart flows work has its priorities in the wrong order.

## How does list quality affect email conversion rate?

Every unengaged address in a campaign send lowers the conversion rate and teaches Gmail and Outlook that your mail goes unread, which pushes more of it to spam. A list of 40,000 where 25,000 have not clicked in a year sends most of its volume to people who will never buy from that email.

Inbox placement has its own diagnosis, set out in [why emails go to spam in 2026](https://proofofpixel.agency/blog/why-are-your-emails-going-to-spam-2026). The conversion fix is segmentation:

- Send campaigns by default to people who clicked or bought in the last 90 days.
- Give quiet subscribers a short sunset flow, then stop mailing them.
- Split buyers from non-buyers, because a first-order discount sent to a repeat customer gives away margin.

## How often should you send marketing emails?

Send campaigns as often as you have something worth reading, and let flows carry the daily volume. For most stores that means one or two campaigns a week to the engaged segment; for a service business, one or two a month. More frequency raises total orders until unsubscribes and spam complaints start to climb.

## How to raise your email marketing conversion rate in 6 steps

Work from the money backwards: find which emails produce orders or enquiries today, fix the automated flows that catch buyers at their moment of intent, then clean the list and tighten campaigns. The steps below take a store or service business from one blended rate to a program you can measure flow by flow.

1. Export the last 90 days of email-attributed orders or enquiries, split by flow and by campaign.
2. Build the welcome, abandoned cart, browse abandonment and post-purchase flows before the next campaign.
3. Give each email one offer and one link destination, and remove the second and third calls to action.
4. Restrict campaigns to subscribers who clicked or bought in the last 90 days.
5. Set up a sunset flow that removes quiet subscribers who do not respond.
6. Check monthly that email-attributed orders in Klaviyo match real orders in Shopify.

Platform totals rarely agree, for the reasons in [why Meta shows more conversions than Shopify](https://proofofpixel.agency/blog/conversion-tracking-gap): each tool credits itself inside its own attribution window, and Klaviyo can credit orders to emails that were only opened.

## What should a service business measure instead of orders?

A service business should measure enquiries and booked appointments that come from email, recorded as a form submission or booking with the email source attached. Placed order rate needs a checkout, so the useful number is booked calls or consultations per thousand emails delivered, reported per flow and per campaign.

For clinics, law firms and trades we set this up in Brevo with the booking event sent back from the website. Proof of Pixel is a marketing and consulting agency for businesses that live on enquiries and orders, building the website, the tracking and the follow-up as one system, with offices in Dubai, New York, London, Antwerp and Kuala Lumpur.

Our [marketing service](https://proofofpixel.agency/services/marketing) covers the flows and the tracking, with the client owning the Klaviyo or Brevo account and the list from day one.

## Sort Your Email Revenue by Source This Week

Pull 90 days of attributed orders or enquiries from Klaviyo or Brevo and split them into flows and campaigns. If campaigns carry most of the total, start with the flows. For a second pair of eyes on those numbers, [talk to our team](https://proofofpixel.agency/contact).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a good conversion rate for email marketing?

For ecommerce, a placed order rate around 0.1-0.2 percent for campaigns and around 2 percent for automated flows is typical. Branvas, summarising Klaviyo data, lists 0.16 percent for campaigns and 2.11 percent for flows. The top 10 percent of flows reach 4.30 percent.

### Why are my email open rates high but sales low?

High opens with low sales usually mean Apple Mail Privacy Protection is inflating the open rate by loading tracking pixels automatically. Judge the email by click rate and attributed orders instead. If clicks are also low, the offer or the audience needs work.

### Do email flows or campaigns make more money?

Flows make more money per recipient by a wide margin. Klaviyo's 2024 benchmark report says automated flows generate up to 30 times more revenue per recipient than campaigns. Campaigns still matter for launches and sales, and they work best on top of working flows.

### How do I improve my email click-through rate?

Give each email one offer and one destination link, and send it to people who engaged recently. Several competing calls to action split attention and lower clicks. Segmenting by purchase history makes the offer relevant to the person reading it.

### Should I remove unengaged email subscribers?

Yes, after a short sunset flow gives them a chance to re-engage. Unengaged addresses lower your conversion rate and push more of your mail toward spam folders. A smaller engaged list usually produces more orders than a large dormant one.
