# Schema markup is the part of your site machines actually read

*Layout shows people what your page means, and software reads almost none of it. What schema markup still does in 2026, and which five types earn their keep.*

A human looks at your page and instantly knows that the large text is a product name, the number beside it is a price, and the block underneath is an address. None of that is obvious to a machine, because layout carries meaning for people and almost nothing for software.

Schema markup closes that gap. It is also the least glamorous work in SEO, which is precisely why so many sites still do not have it.

## What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data added to a page that states plainly what its content means. It uses the shared vocabulary at schema.org and is normally written in JSON-LD, a small block of code in the page source. The visible page stays the same, and search engines and AI systems get a plain description of what it contains.

## What it actually does now

Be careful with older advice here. Schema is often sold as a route to rich results, the stars and extra detail you see in search listings. Some of that is still true. Some of it stopped being true and the guides never updated.

### The FAQ change most guides missed

In August 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well known government and health sites. If you add FAQ markup to your business site today expecting expanded questions under your listing, you will almost certainly not get them. Google made a similar cut to HowTo results around the same time.

FAQ markup still earns its place, for a different reason. A clearly labelled question and answer pair is exactly the shape an [AI assistant](/blog/ai-search-optimisation) can lift and quote, so the reason to mark it up now is clean parsing by machines.

## What does schema markup look like on a page?

Schema markup in practice is a JSON-LD script tag sitting in a page's head or body, holding a plain object of type and property pairs such as name, price and availability. Nothing about it touches the visible page. A crawler or an AI parser reads the script, and a person never sees it.

This is the kind of code-level check our own [website builds](/services/websites) handle by default, so a new project ships with baseline schema rather than shipping it as a phase-two afterthought.

## The types worth implementing

Organization is the foundation. It tells search engines your official name, logo and profiles, which is how you stop a stranger's photo appearing beside your brand in an AI answer or knowledge panel.

LocalBusiness matters if you have a location, since it carries your [address, hours and service area](/blog/google-business-profile-management-2026). Product is close to compulsory for ecommerce, because price and availability are exactly what shopping surfaces and [AI shopping assistants](/blog/agentic-commerce-2027) read. BreadcrumbList explains where a page sits in your site. Article or BlogPosting establishes who wrote something and when.

Five types cover almost every small business, and a proposal for twenty is usually someone generating work.

## Does schema markup improve SEO rankings?

Schema markup does not raise rankings on its own. Google's documentation says correct markup can make a page eligible for rich results, with no guarantee they appear, and the markup makes a page easier for search and AI systems to parse.

Proof of Pixel is a marketing and consulting agency for businesses that live on enquiries and orders, building the website, the tracking and the follow-up as one system, with offices in Dubai, New York, London, Antwerp and Kuala Lumpur.

Treat schema as table stakes: it removes a reason for search engines and AI systems to skip your page.

## The rules that keep you out of trouble

1. Only mark up what a visitor can see on the page. Structured data describing content missing from the page is a policy violation, and Google issues manual actions for it.
2. Do not publish review or rating markup about your own business on your own site. Google treats self-serving reviews as ineligible, and inventing an aggregate rating to fill the field is the fastest route to a penalty available in [technical SEO](/services/seo). If you have no verified reviews, the correct amount of review markup is none.
3. Keep it accurate as things change. Stale markup is worse than no markup, because you are now confidently telling machines something false about your opening hours or your prices.

## How to check it

Google's Rich Results Test tells you which features a page qualifies for. The Schema Markup Validator checks whether your code is valid regardless of whether Google shows a feature for it. [Search Console](/blog/shopify-store-not-showing-up-google) reports problems across the whole site once it has crawled you, which is the view that matters most.

One trap worth knowing: if your site renders in the browser rather than on the server, test the rendered page rather than the source. Markup that only appears after JavaScript runs is easy to break without noticing.

> Proof of Pixel's position: schema markup belongs in every site build from day one, because it makes a page legible to software that cannot see its layout.

## Your first day of schema work

1. Run your homepage through the Rich Results Test and see what is already there. Most sites find either nothing at all or something a plugin generated years ago that nobody has read since.
2. Fix Organization first.
3. Add LocalBusiness if you have an address.
4. Add Product across your catalogue if you sell online.

That sequence takes a day and it is the cheapest technical SEO available.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is schema markup?

Schema markup is structured data added to a page that states plainly what its content means, using the shared vocabulary at schema.org and usually written in JSON-LD. Visitors see no change, and search engines and AI systems get a clear description of the page.

### Does FAQ schema still show rich results?

For most sites, no: in August 2023 Google restricted FAQ rich results to well known government and health sites. FAQ markup is still worth adding for machine readability, since a labelled question and answer pair is easy for an AI assistant to quote.

### Which schema types should a small business use?

Organization as the foundation, LocalBusiness if you have a physical location or service area, Product if you sell online, BreadcrumbList for site structure, and Article or BlogPosting for content. Those five cover almost every case. Longer lists are usually someone generating work.

### Can schema markup get my site penalised?

Yes, schema markup can get a site penalised. Marking up content that is not visible on the page violates Google's structured data policies and can trigger a manual action. Self-serving review markup about your own business, and invented aggregate ratings in particular, are among the fastest ways to get one.

### Does schema markup help with AI search?

It helps AI systems parse what your page means rather than guessing from layout. Clear Organization data also controls which name and logo get associated with your brand, which is how you avoid an unrelated image appearing next to your business in a generated answer.
