AI search is rewriting SEO. Here is what actually gets you cited
Traditional SEO earns you a ranking. AI search earns you a citation inside the answer itself. Here is what changes, and the concrete work that gets your business quoted by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews.

For twenty years the goal of SEO was simple: rank on page one and collect the click. That deal is quietly being renegotiated. Roughly 45% of Google searches now show an AI Overview, and a large share of those searches end without anyone visiting a website at all. The answer arrives before the click does.
This does not mean SEO is dead. It means the prize changed. You are no longer only competing for a position on a results page. You are competing to be the source the AI quotes when it composes its answer.
Ranking versus being cited
A ranking is a position. A citation is an inclusion. They overlap but they are not the same thing, and they reward different work.
Google AI Overviews lean heavily on pages that already rank well, so classic SEO still carries you there. ChatGPT and Perplexity behave differently. They pull from a wider pool, and they favour content that is easy to lift cleanly: a self-contained passage that answers one question completely, without needing the paragraph above it for context.
That is the single biggest shift. Write passages that survive being cut out of the page.
What actually moves the needle
Research out of Princeton (KDD 2024) tested optimisation methods against generative engines and found a clear hierarchy. Citing sources lifted visibility by around 40%. Adding specific statistics lifted it around 37%. Quoting named experts, around 30%. Keyword stuffing, the tactic that merely underperformed in classic SEO, actively reduced visibility by about 10%.
The practical translation:
- Lead every section with a direct answer, then explain. Do not build up to the point.
- Keep the key answer to 40 to 60 words so it can be lifted whole.
- Use real numbers with dates and sources instead of adjectives like fast or leading.
- Add FAQ, Article and Organization schema so machines can parse what the page means.
- Check your robots.txt actually allows GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended.
The robots.txt trap
This one is worth checking today. Plenty of sites blocked AI crawlers in 2023 to protect their content from training, then never revisited the decision. Those same rules now prevent the assistant from citing you. Blocking training and blocking citation are the same directive, and most businesses would happily accept the first to gain the second.
You are probably cited somewhere you do not control
Here is the uncomfortable part. Brands are roughly six times more likely to be surfaced through third-party sources than through their own domain. Wikipedia alone accounts for a meaningful share of ChatGPT citations, with Reddit and industry publications close behind.
So the work is not purely on-site. Getting into a credible roundup, having an accurate presence on the review platforms your buyers actually check, and being genuinely useful in the communities where your market talks all feed the same machine.
How to tell if it is working
Start with the least technical test available: ask the assistants directly.
- Take your twenty most commercially important questions and run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google.
- Record whether you appear, who does instead, and which page of theirs got pulled.
- Repeat it monthly in a spreadsheet before you spend anything on a monitoring tool.
The pattern in who keeps getting cited will teach you more about what to fix than any dashboard.
If an AI assistant cannot quote you, it will quote whoever it can. That is the whole game now.
Where to start
- Pick your five highest-intent pages.
- Rewrite the opening of each so it answers its question in the first forty words.
- Add FAQ, Article and Organization schema to each one.
- Confirm the AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt.
- Re-run your twenty queries in a month and see what changed.
That sequence costs very little and it is the fastest route from invisible to quotable.
Frequently asked questions
Is traditional SEO still worth doing?
Yes. Google AI Overviews draw heavily on pages that already rank, so technical health, site structure and authority still carry you. AI search optimisation adds a layer on top rather than replacing the foundation.
How is AI search optimisation different from SEO?
SEO earns a position on a results page. AI search optimisation earns a citation inside a generated answer. They share foundations like clean structure and schema, but AI systems favour self-contained passages, clear definitions and specific data over keyword-optimised prose.
How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT or Perplexity?
Structure content as clear self-contained answers, add schema, publish specific data rather than vague claims, and make sure AI crawlers are not blocked in robots.txt. Third-party mentions matter too, since assistants often cite sources other than your own site.
Does keyword stuffing still work?
No, and it is now actively harmful. Princeton's 2024 research found keyword stuffing reduced visibility in generative engines by around 10%, where in classic SEO it was merely ineffective.
