How to Grow Your YouTube Channel

YouTube growth runs on click-through and watch time. Lasting income runs on an email list, a Shopify store and tracking that shows which video sold what.

Most YouTube channels with 10,000 to 500,000 subscribers grow on YouTube and own almost nothing outside it.

What does it mean to grow a YouTube channel?

Growing a YouTube channel means raising two numbers. On YouTube, more people click your videos and keep watching, so YouTube recommends them to more viewers. Off YouTube, more of those viewers join your email list and buy from a store on your own domain, so your income stops depending on one platform.

  • YouTube growth runs on two levers: click-through rate on titles and thumbnails, and watch time after the click.
  • YouTube Studio's A/B test, widely called Test & Compare, tries up to three titles or thumbnails and keeps the version with the highest watch time.
  • Proof of Pixel's check of 153 channels in October 2026 found 132 without their own merch store and 124 without an email signup.
  • Tracking each sale to its video shows which content earns and puts sponsor pricing on real numbers.

How do titles and thumbnails grow a YouTube channel?

Titles and thumbnails set your click-through rate: the share of people who see your video in a feed or search and choose to watch it. More clicks on the same impressions mean more views, and viewers who stay give YouTube a reason to show the video more widely.

YouTube Studio's A/B test lets you try up to three titles, three thumbnails or combinations of both on one video, according to YouTube Help's page on testing titles and thumbnails (2026). Test one idea at a time, such as a face against no face, and log every winner.

Why does watch time matter more than clicks?

Watch time matters more because YouTube's own A/B test judges a title or thumbnail by how long people watch after they click. YouTube Help states that when an A/B test ends, YouTube shows the version with the highest watch time to all viewers. A misleading thumbnail can win clicks and still lose the test.

Why do YouTubers need an audience off YouTube?

YouTubers need an audience off YouTube because YouTube controls who sees each upload and what each view pays. An email list and a store on your own domain reach viewers directly, without paying per view or per click, and keep earning when a video underperforms.

In Proof of Pixel's own check of 153 English-language YouTube channels with 10,000 to 500,000 subscribers in October 2026, we found no merch store of their own for 132 and no email signup for 124. Our page for YouTube creators shows what we build for them.

The Influencer Marketing Factory's 2026 Creator Economy Report found that product and merch sales, together with affiliate marketing, make up 21.2 percent of creator income.

In our client work on Shopify stores and email programmes we keep seeing the same pattern: a buyer on a list can be reached again with one email, while the store has to find a guest buyer again through paid ads. Our lifecycle work for DC Greater Goods brought a 37 percent increase in repeat orders from new email and SMS flows.

Proof of Pixel is a marketing and consulting agency for businesses that live on enquiries and orders, building the website, the tracking and the follow-up as one system, with offices in Dubai, New York, London, Antwerp and Malaysia. For creators we build the site and Shopify store, make the merch in our own manufacturing, run the email list and tracking, and work on titles and thumbnails.

Proof of Pixel's position: a creator with more than 10,000 subscribers should own an email list and a store on their own domain before chasing the next 10,000.

How to sell merch on YouTube

To sell merch on YouTube, run a Shopify store on your own domain and connect it to your channel through YouTube Shopping. Products then show in a shelf under your videos, in a store tab and as tags in videos and live streams, and every order lands in your own store.

YouTube Help's guide to connecting your store sets out the steps: give the store admin's email access to the channel, pick the channel in Shopify's Google & YouTube app, and allow a few business days for YouTube's product review.

For other brands' products, YouTube opened its Shopping affiliate program to Partner Program creators with at least 500 subscribers on March 25, 2026, according to its announcement of the 500-subscriber threshold.

How to grow your YouTube channel in 7 steps

Grow your YouTube channel by working both halves in order: raise click-through and watch time first, then capture viewers in an email list and a store you own, then measure which videos drive signups and sales. Each step fits alongside a normal upload schedule.

  1. Run an A/B test in YouTube Studio on each of your next three uploads.
  2. Rewrite the opening of your next script where your retention graph shows the steepest drop.
  3. Register a domain in your own name and put an email signup at the top of its homepage.
  4. Give viewers one concrete reason to join, such as early access to merch drops.
  5. Connect a Shopify store on that domain to your channel through the Google & YouTube app.
  6. Tag your products in every video where they fit.
  7. Add UTM parameters to every description link and set up server-side tracking, so each order records the video that sent it.

How does tracking help you price sponsorships?

Tracking shows which video sent each visitor, signup and order, so you can show a sponsor what your audience does after watching. A creator who reports the clicks and sales a video drove can price on results, and one with view counts alone prices on reach.

Ad blockers and privacy settings stop the browser tag on some visits, the gap we break down in our guide to the conversion tracking gap. Server-side tracking records the order on the store's server, so the sale still counts.

Record four numbers for every video:

  • Clicks from the description, tagged with UTM parameters.
  • Email signups, with the video name saved in Klaviyo or Brevo.
  • Orders and revenue, sent server-side.
  • Repeat orders from subscribers that video brought in.

Our marketing service sets this up, with tracking, email and store in one dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

How can I grow my YouTube channel faster?

Grow faster by raising click-through rate with tested titles and thumbnails and by holding viewers longer in the first minute of each video. YouTube Studio's A/B test lets you try up to three versions and keeps the one with the highest watch time. Upload on a steady schedule so each test gets fresh impressions.

How do I sell merch on YouTube?

Sell merch on YouTube by connecting a Shopify store to your channel through YouTube Shopping, so your products show in a shelf under your videos and in a store tab. YouTube reviews connected products against its policies and Google Merchant Center policies, which typically takes a few business days. Running the store on your own domain keeps the customer list and the margin with you.

How many subscribers do you need to make money on YouTube?

Full YouTube Partner Program eligibility needs 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 valid public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the last 90 days, according to YouTube Help (2026). The YouTube Shopping affiliate program opened to Partner Program creators with 500 subscribers in March 2026. Your own merch store and email list have no subscriber minimum.

Does YouTube Test & Compare pick the thumbnail with the most clicks?

No, YouTube's A/B test keeps the title or thumbnail with the highest watch time, which can differ from the version with the most clicks. YouTube Help states that YouTube shows the winning version to all viewers when the test ends. A thumbnail that over-promises can pull clicks and still lose on watch time.

Should YouTubers have an email list?

Yes, every YouTuber who earns from their channel should have an email list, because it reaches viewers directly without depending on YouTube's recommendations. In Proof of Pixel's check of 153 channels with 10,000 to 500,000 subscribers in October 2026, 124 had no email signup. A list also gives you signup numbers per video to show sponsors.
